Abhyanga – Ayruvedic Massage

Abhyanga – Ayurvedic Massage

This warm oil massage is a common wellness practice in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine in India. This massage treatment uses 1.5-2 oz of warm herbal infused oil over the entire body from head to toe. Long fluid, continuous strokes are used with special attention to the joints and areas of the body where nerve endings are concentrated, such as the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. This treatment induces deep relaxation, quiets the mind, and soothes the nervous system.

The main difference between Abhyanga and swedish massage is the liberally applied warm, dosha specific, herbal oil. The warm oil penetrates deep into the tissues, fortifying and strengthening the body. Unlike a deep tissue massage, the technique uses light to medium pressure, with some focused and firmer pressure as needed.

Abhyanga warm oil massage is best for those looking for relaxation or those interested in an Ayruvedic approach to longevity and health. The herbal infused oil is deeply nourishing and healing and specific to your dosha, one of the three energies that make up your Ayurvedic constitution: vata, pitta, and kapha. Vata is associated primarily with the air element in nature, pitta with fire, and kapha with water. We are all made up of a unique combination of these three forces. I will determine your dosha, that is, your body-mind constitution, through a short, emailed quiz.

The best time to schedule an Abhyanga is when you can go home directly after the treatment to shower and relax. The benefits of Abhyanga are numerous. It's balancing to all the doshas, it’s calming to the nervous system, it strengthens the bones and the immune system, and it acts as a gentle detox. In addition, according to Ayruveda, it's the best practice for longevity and disease prevention.

My personal introduction to Ayruveda was during my kundalini yoga teacher training in 1999, and my Ayurvedic education continues in the spring of 2023 at the California College of Ayurveda.
